Is Your Deodorant Causing A Decline In Your Egg Quality Or Contributing to Miscarriage?
I became aware of the detrimental effects of aluminum-based deodorant over 20 years ago, from the article written by Dr. Jennifer Margulis, the author of “Your Baby, Your Way: Taking Charge of Your Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Parenting Decisions For A Happier, Healthier Family.” She is one of my personal heroes. Dr. Jennifer Margulis is a Fulbright awardee and mother of four (mothers make the best managers you know that!), she has worked on a child survival campaign in West Africa, advocated for an end to child slavery in Pakistan on prime-time TV in France, and taught post-colonial literature to non-traditional students in inner-city Atlanta.
In her article, she said that “scientists found that aluminum in vitro, when exposed to healthy cells turned them into cancer-causing cells”. Then, when researchers injected these cancer-causing cells into immunocompromised mice, the mice developed tumors.
Therefore, if exposure to aluminum can cause cancer, what do you think it’s going to do to your egg quality or ability to maintain a healthy pregnancy?
I don’t recommend using most over-the-counter deodorants. Why? Because most regular brands contain aluminum. Look at the label to make sure it says “aluminum-free”. There are a lot of options out there. You are applying a potentially toxic substance directly onto your skin in a very sensitive area. There is a concentration of lymph nodes in your armpits, you do not need or want to be adding to the congestion there. Also, this is the beginning of your HEART channel or acupuncture meridian.
Tips for limiting your aluminum and heavy metal exposure:
- Read labels! Look for “aluminum-free” baking powder.
- Don’t cook on tin foil!
- Make sure all your health and beauty products are as natural as possible.
- Avoid aluminum cookware- chose glass, stainless steel or cast-iron cookware instead.
If you are looking for pain relief, find alternatives to acetaminophen. Over-the-counter pain relief pills can actually decrease your body’s ability to rid itself of aluminum and other harmful chemicals. According to Duke University Medical School scientist Dr. William Parker, acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol. Depletes the body of glutathione and can compromise detoxification pathways.

Action Plan
Step one: Absorb the information/let this information settle in. Does it make sense to you? Do you feel that whatever I or anyone else is sharing is relevant to your situation or diagnosis? If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust? Everyone wants to jump right into the action plan. You are in charge of your health and quality of your life so in order to be in the driver’s seat, develop trust in yourself; develop your intuition; yes, get good guidance but ultimately decide what makes the best sense for you and your health. Best outcomes come after this step.
Step two: What can you stop doing, or eliminate? What can you replace it with?
What you do every day matters most; we have power as consumers and we have to get very good at reading labels.
Become a knowledgeable consumer. We cannot trust those in power who stand to make the most money off of us.
Take care of yourself.
Incorporate proper nutrition, and hydration and get plenty of sleep.
What about the rest?
Exposure to environmental toxins? Especially in your health and beauty products.
I wish that ignorance was bliss…and it may be until you are TTC or have experienced pregnancy loss.
I focus on causation; the why and then the how. Idiopathic is not a word we use in common-sense health.
Let’s look at deodorant and smell a little closer.
Ask yourself, why do you smell?
What do you smell like?
It’s how we diagnose in TCM, before CAT scans and MRI’s, we relied on the power of our own observational and sensory skills (observe color, smell, sound.
Refer to the 5 Element theory. Each organ is connected to a smell, taste, sound, etc. Google 5 element acupuncture.
Rotten, for example, is the smell of the Lung/Large intestine. So if you decide to sweat, don’t use deodorant, and notice that you smell “rotten”, then let’s look at some purification practices to support your lungs and large intestine.
If you decide that you smell “bad”, then you need to engage in purification practices. I’m not sure that smelling “good” is the goal either.
How about smelling “neutral”. Begin there.
Are you going to use deodorant if you are intentionally sweating out toxins? I hope not.
Therefore, if exposure to aluminum can cause cancer, what do you think it’s going to do to your egg quality or ability to maintain a healthy pregnancy?
