Supporting Healthy Ovarian Function

Give Your Ovaries The Love They Deserve

If you’re trying to conceive, you may be concerned about your ovarian health. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with a low ovarian reserve or have a condition like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there are steps you can take to care for your ovaries and your overall endocrine system. In this video, Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., discusses some strategies you can use to give your ovaries some love.

Everything Is Connected: the Endocrine System

As a practitioner of LED light therapy and acupuncture at CNY Fertility Center, Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., fields a lot of questions about how to improve ovarian health. First, she encourages clients to shift out of an isolated mindset. Often, patients are diagnosed with a particular issue or condition affecting their fertility.

“Everything is interconnected, just like we are – we are all connected, and that’s how the endocrine system functions,” says Waters. “If you’ve been diagnosed with anything related to your ovaries, they aren’t working alone.”

Stress and the Body

The autonomic nervous system influences endocrine function, which includes the ovaries. When a person is stressed, their endocrine system can be affected. The goal, Waters explains, is not to eliminate stress, but to change the way we respond to it and develop strategies for becoming more resilient.

“Stress isn’t going away – you’re still going to have external stressors, whether it’s your commute, your challenges at work, or your relationship.”

Part of becoming more resilient, Waters notes, is changing our mindset and developing positive thinking. She encourages clients to develop a mantra or phrase they can use to shift their thought patterns.

Bringing the Body into Alignment

The ovaries are embedded in a network of tissues, fascia, and muscles in the abdomen. An acute injury or a chronic condition can decrease blood flow to the ovaries, as well as bring the spine out of alignment. In her practice, Waters looks at the body in totality and considers the possible issues a client can address to support proper ovarian function.

For some people, that’s bringing the ovaries and uterus back into the correct position through Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (ATMAT). For others, it can be helpful to see a chiropractor or spine specialist to ensure no issues are inhibiting the spinal nerves that serve the abdomen.
