Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy

What is ATMAT?
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy were developed in the 1980s by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, a naprapathic physician and master herbalist. Naprapathy is the practice of identifying constricted connective tissues in the body and returning them to their natural state. Dr. Arvigo spent decades studying under traditional Mayan healers in Central America. She went on to found the Arvigo Institute, which trains bodywork practitioners around the world.
ATMAT is a noninvasive technique that can help improve blood flow to the organs and ensure they are in the correct position. Drawing on abdominal techniques that have been used by indigenous healers for hundreds of years, ATMAT can be used on patients of all ages and gender identities.
Benefits of Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy
Trauma, disease, or injury can put stress on the abdominal and pelvic organs, restricting the flow of energy. The external abdominal techniques of ATMAT promote improved organ function. This healing modality is perhaps best known for correcting a prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus. However, ATMAT can also help treat individuals with conditions including:
- Benign prostate enlargement
- Chronic fatigue
- Crohn’s disease
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Infertility
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Menstrual conditions
- Migraines and chronic pain
- Postpartum symptoms and C-section recovery
What to Expect at Your Appointment
During your first therapy session, we will spend time going over your health history, lifestyle, and any current symptoms or concerns. Your therapist will provide a noninvasive manipulation of the upper and lower abdomen to improve circulation and nerve conduction. They may also work on your lower back or hips to encourage lymphatic drainage.
When the therapy is complete, your practitioner will discuss any next steps and home care for any chronic issues affecting the abdominal area. You should drink plenty of water afterward to help the body stay hydrated.
Other Services at Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac.
Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other services, including:
- Acupuncture: Grounded in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture uses thin, sterile steel needles to simulate different points along the energy pathways in a person’s body. Acupuncture can be used to treat chronic pain, inflammation, and issues like migraines or sports injuries.
- LED light therapy: Our 30-minute light therapy sessions are painless and non-invasive. We use pads of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to reduce chronic pain and improve circulation. We also offer phototherapy patches so you can take advantage of the healing power of light at home.
- Microbiome test and consultation: An analysis of a patient’s gut microbiome can help identify digestive tract issues that could affect overall health. We use genetic sequencing of a stool sample to analyze the microorganisms in the gut and recommend dietary changes or other adjustments.
We can also suggest specific nutritional supplements based on your specific health concerns or goals.
