Reproductive Health

Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., sees many clients undergoing fertility treatments and using assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Our practice uses modalities including traditional acupuncture, LED light therapy, and Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy to treat conditions that affect the reproductive system.

Endometriosis

The tissue that lines the inside of the uterus is known as the endometrium. Each menstrual cycle, a new endometrial lining grows to prepare for a fertilized egg. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue develops where it shouldn’t, such as on the fallopian tubes or ovaries. Because the excess tissue growing in these areas doesn’t shed during a menstrual cycle, it can build up and cause painful cysts and inflammation.

Recurring Pregnancy Loss

Pregnancy loss is common—affecting as many as one in four pregnancies. Recurrent pregnancy loss, defined as two or more miscarriages, is less common. Unfortunately, it’s often difficult to identify a cause. Acupuncture is safe to use after a miscarriage and can help support mental and emotional well-being following a loss.

Unexplained Infertility

A diagnosis of unexplained infertility happens when a reproductive endocrinologist or other health provider cannot pinpoint a cause of an individual’s or couple’s inability to conceive. Some patients with unexplained infertility choose to use ART such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a hormonal condition that causes cysts to grow on the ovaries due to excess androgen production. People with PCOS often experience excess hair growth and acne. They may also deal with irregular menstrual periods and infertility. PCOS is common—the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reports that this condition affects one in 10 women of childbearing age.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

PMS refers to a group of symptoms that many women experience in the days or weeks leading up to a menstrual period. These can include:
• Fatigue
• Bloating
• Difficulty concentrating
• Anxiety, irritability, or depression
• Breast tenderness
• Abdominal pain

Some people have a severe form of PMS known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for menstrual cramps caused by contractions of the muscles in the uterus. These muscles contract and relax to help shed the uterine lining. For some women, menstrual cramping is mild, but for others, dysmenorrhea may be so painful that they need to miss work or school.

Hormonal Imbalances

Hormones are essential chemicals that the body produces to regulate various functions—everything from sleep and mood to metabolism and sexual function. The hormones and the glands that produce them are collectively known as the endocrine system. Hormonal imbalances can be caused by stress, trauma, or even certain medications.

Digestive and Gut Health

The food and drinks we consume each day are a source of energy for every cell in the body. The digestive system includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. It also relies on the nervous and circulatory systems to function properly.

Acupuncture, light therapy, and other modalities can address a range of digestive complaints, including:
• Constipation and diarrhea
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Crohn’s disease
• Acid reflux
• Ulcerative colitis

Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., can also recommend supplements and dietary changes to promote overall digestive system health—helping to detoxify the body and strengthen the immune system. Additionally, we can assist with bladder concerns such as stress incontinence, a common condition in which movements like sneezing or coughing put pressure on the bladder.

Chronic Pain Relief

Many clients seek acupuncture treatment from Jennifer Waters, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac., to relieve chronic pain caused by arthritis or a herniated disc. Old injuries from sports or repetitive stress may flare up and lead to pain and inflammation. Our practitioners work to identify the root cause of pain and determine the most effective method to bring the body back into balance.
